Onion Khaltsedon

Why has 'Chalcedony' remained a standard in the mid-season onion segment?

This variety has long since moved from the new release category to being a workhorse for the agricultural sector. The secret to its popularity is simple: it is perfectly balanced for producers who grow onions not just for field sales, but for long-term storage and industrial processing.

Key Advantages

• Predictable Yield: With proper agronomic practices, yields reach up to 50 tons per hectare, making production economics highly predictable.
• Ideal for Processing: Its round shape and 130–140g weight are perfect for industrial peeling and slicing. The dense bronze skin reliably protects the crisp white flesh.
• Maturation Timeline: A 100–110 day vegetation period allows growers to time harvests for optimal market pricing.

Who is this variety for? 'Chalcedony' is the optimal choice for operations focused on stability. Its greatest strength lies in its shelf life and transportability. If your business model involves storing onions through the winter, this variety has virtually no competitors in terms of seed investment versus output. The only downside is its demand for consistent irrigation; like most high-yield varieties, it is sensitive to water stress, meaning its full potential is only realized with adequate moisture management.
