Description Serpnevii
Lupin is a decorative and useful perennial plant of the legume family (Fabaceae). The height of an adult individual varies from 80 cm to 1.5 m, and the flowers can be blue-violet, blue, cream, white, red, or purple. The leaves are palmate, long, and slightly hairy, giving the plant an elegant appearance. Thanks to a strong rhizome capable of penetrating up to 2 m deep, the lupin is resistant to drying out and can grow in various soil types – from weakly acidic and weakly alkaline to loams and sandy loams.

For garden use, the lupin is valued for its bright, prolonged flowering (up to 30 days) and ease of care. The plant prefers sunny locations but can grow in partial shade. When planting, rhizomes are best done in late April–early May; after flowering ends – in September–October, the bushes can be divided to preserve their decorative appearance. Regular watering and feeding with mineral fertilizers (especially potassium and phosphorus) promote rapid growth and rich flowering. During the winter period, the lupin does not require covering, but in severe frosts, the stems can be slightly cut down to 20 cm and the root part covered with fallen leaves.

Lupin is also widely used as a fodder crop and cover crop in agriculture. It fixes nitrogen from the air, adding up to 180–200 kg/ha of biological nitrogen and increasing the content of organic matter in the soil. As fodder, lupin contains 38–42% protein without nitrates and tannins, making it a valuable component of compound feeds. Due to the variety of varieties (yellow, white, narrow-leaved), the plant is suitable for cultivation in both coastal and steppe conditions, withstanding low temperatures down to -4 °C. This makes the lupin a universal solution for both decorative landscapes and improving the fertility of agricultural lands.
