Alfalfa Zlata

Field Performance of 'Zlata' Alfalfa

Selecting an alfalfa variety is a long-term investment, and the 'Zlata' variety, developed by the SKFNAZ research center, is a solid choice for those prioritizing reliability. It is a workhorse crop that offers a balance between biomass yield and management ease, making it highly effective for standard farming operations.

Handling and Field Operation

The variety reaches a height of 65–70 cm. For an operator, this is an ideal range: it is high enough to ensure a clean sweep for the mower header while remaining short enough to avoid lodging under normal weather conditions. This height ensures that the hay is not contaminated by soil particles during the mowing process, which is essential for maintaining high-quality animal feed.

• Mowing Efficiency: Because of its uniform growth, harvesting equipment runs smoothly. There is less downtime for unclogging machinery, allowing you to maximize acreage covered per shift.
• Regrowth Potential: Following the first cut, 'Zlata' shows vigorous regrowth. It recovers quickly enough to stay on schedule for the second and third cuts, which is vital for planning seasonal workloads.
• Persistence: After the establishment year, the stand becomes dense enough to suppress most weeds, reducing the need for aggressive herbicide intervention and lowering overall production costs.

From a maintenance perspective, this variety is straightforward. It does not demand exotic agronomic techniques; standard sowing rates and conventional fertilization programs provided by the original research center are sufficient to achieve the genetic potential of the plant. If you are looking for a variety that provides consistent forage quality without being overly sensitive to field management errors, 'Zlata' remains a practical and highly functional option for your forage rotation.
