Description Fregat
Narrow-leaved lupin is an annual legume crop, known for its high nitrogen-fixing ability and resistance to cold conditions. The plant reaches a height of 50 to 120 cm, has a well-developed taproot system that can penetrate the soil to a depth of more than two meters, allowing it to absorb difficult-to-access nutrient compounds. Thanks to frost hardiness and the ability to germinate at temperatures from 2 to 4 degrees Celsius, lupin is successfully grown even in regions with harsh winters.

For optimal growth, lupin prefers light and loamy soils – loams, sandy, or garden soils. It does not tolerate waterlogging and strongly calcareous soils, but easily withstands acidification. When planting, seeds should be sown at a depth of 2–4 cm depending on the soil texture: deeper sowing (3–4 cm) is suitable for sandy soils, and for heavy soil – 2–3 cm. Sowing is usually carried out at the end of the first fifteen days after the start of sowing early spring crops; with an early spring, the interval is increased to 10–12 days.

Lupin serves as an excellent cover crop and green fertilizer, as well as feed for livestock. The yield of green mass is from 300 to 500 c/ha, and seeds – about 8–10 c/ha. Seeds are edible and often used as food or feed for livestock. Flowering lasts 20–30 days; although the flowers do not release nectar, they produce pollen, which can be important for beekeeping. When placing apiaries near lupin crops, the honeycomb consists largely of its pollen.

For maximum efficiency, it is recommended to alternate lupin with cereal crops: after potatoes, corn, and other light crops it gives large harvests, and after barley, wheat or rye – a good green fertilizer. When growing feed and sideral alkaloid lupin, it should be planted on fields where alkaloid species were previously not present, to avoid delay in germination due to the hard seed coat. This approach allows maintaining the health of crops and reducing the risk of disease and pest damage.
