Lupine «Locomotive» is a universal variety of narrow-leaf lupine, created by intraspecific hybridization and selected through multiple individual selection from the combination Belozerniy 110 × Pelikan. The variety belongs to early-maturing types; the vegetative period is 90‑98 days, and technological maturity of green mass is reached 55‑60 days after sowing.
Plants reach a height of 75 to 120 cm, which ensures good resistance to lodging. Leaves are narrow, dark-green with anthocyanins, and flowers are light-purple (blue-grey) collected in terminal inflorescences and continue to bloom for 20‑30 days. High photosynthetic activity of leaves contributes to good growth and development.
The yield of biomass is average 2.42 t/ha (potentially up to 3.1 t/ha), and green mass reaches 43.5 t/ha (up to 57 t/ha). Protein content in seeds is high – 33% (up to 36‑40%), which makes the variety valuable for producing compound feeds and the feed industry. Seeds contain a low level of alkaloids (0.032%) and a high percentage of crude proteins.
The variety is resistant to anthracnose, wilting and pod shatter, and also withstands drought conditions well. It is suitable for growing on light loams or loamy soils with a good drainage system, but does not require special soil preparation.
Lupine «Locomotive» is widely used as a source of compound feeds and green mass, as well as as a cover crop for improving soil structure and fertility. Its high productivity, resistance to diseases, and favorable agronomic characteristics make it a sought-after choice among farmers and feed enterprises.
