The «Lider» lupin variety, developed by the Institute of Agriculture of Polissya (UAAS), is a specialized crop designed for intensive farming systems that prioritize soil biological health. In Ukrainian agricultural practices, this variety has established itself as one of the most productive green manure crops, capable of significantly improving soil structure without heavy reliance on synthetic fertilizers.

Agronomic performance and key characteristics

The primary function of «Lider» is the rapid accumulation of organic matter. With a green mass yield of up to 60 tons per hectare, it provides a substantial organic boost for subsequent crops in a rotation.

• Nitrogen fixation: Through its symbiotic relationship with rhizobia, the crop accumulates significant nitrogen levels, which, upon incorporation into the soil, become readily available for winter cereals or industrial crops.
• High protein content: With a protein concentration of 36–42% in dry matter, it serves a dual purpose as both an excellent green manure and a high-value protein component for livestock feed.
• Soil aeration: The deep taproot system improves soil structure, enhancing both aeration and moisture retention even in dense clay-loam soils.

Practical application scenarios

Farmers utilize «Lider» to revitalize degraded lands or to restore fertility following nutrient-depleting crops. Its main advantage is its rapid establishment, which effectively suppresses weed pressure by creating a dense canopy. Incorporating the green mass during the flowering stage ensures an optimal carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, facilitating efficient mineralization. Integrating this variety into the crop rotation reduces the need for synthetic nitrogen application and improves the overall phytosanitary condition of the fields, leading to higher sustainable yields.
