Smooth brome Dragon

A legacy of the A.G. Lorch Potato Research Center

The 'Drakon' brome grass variety is a product of the Federal Research Center for Potato named after A.G. Lorch. While the institute is primarily known for potato breeding, its research into fodder crops has yielded a variety that provides livestock farms with consistent, high-quality green mass.

Fodder quality and economic role

Smooth brome (Bromus inermis) 'Drakon' is a perennial grass essential for modern agricultural production. Its primary market application involves the establishment of highly productive hayfields and managed pastures. Key features include:

• Rapid regrowth capacity following mowing, enabling multiple harvests per season.
• Excellent leaf-to-stem ratio, ensuring high nutritional value of the harvested hay.
• Strong adaptability to varying soil types across diverse climatic regions.

Operational use in agriculture

Designed strictly for fodder purposes, 'Drakon' excels in the creation of long-term perennial pastures due to its resistance to trampling. It maintains productivity over several years, which is a major benefit for farm management efficiency. Its cold hardiness and drought tolerance provide a layer of security for agronomists in regions with challenging agricultural conditions. Beyond its nutritional benefits, 'Drakon' is highly effective at strengthening soil structure, making it a valuable tool for preventing soil erosion in vulnerable areas.
