Alfalfa Tenderness

Optimizing Forage Yields: The «Nizhnist» Advantage

«Nizhnist» alfalfa, developed by the Plant Breeding and Genetics Institute (Ukraine), is a specialized variety tailored for commercial forage production. It focuses on balancing structural biomass with high nutritional quality, making it a reliable asset for livestock farms aiming for consistent hay and haylage yields.

Agronomic Profile and Performance

• Growth Architecture: With a plant height of 70–90 cm, this variety is optimized for efficient harvesting, ensuring minimal field losses during mowing and windrow pickup.
• Regeneration Speed: The variety exhibits rapid regrowth following harvesting, which is essential for maximizing the number of cuts—typically 3 to 4 per season depending on moisture availability.
• Nutritional Value: A high leaf-to-stem ratio ensures that the harvested mass contains the high protein levels necessary for balanced livestock nutrition.

Practical Application Scenarios

For farm managers, «Nizhnist» is a workhorse variety designed for long-term forage stands. Its primary application lies in high-intensity harvesting cycles where land productivity is measured by the total output of digestible protein. It performs best in soils with neutral pH, responding well to standard intensive management practices.

When planning harvest operations, focusing on the early blooming stage is key to exploiting the variety's potential. This stage captures the ideal balance between fiber content and protein density. Because «Nizhnist» is bred for structural integrity, it resists lodging, which keeps harvesting machinery running smoothly and allows for cleaner pickup, ultimately reducing feed waste in storage. For operations integrating their own fodder into cattle diets, this variety serves as a cost-effective, high-quality solution to reduce dependency on synthetic protein supplements.
