A Pillar for Forage Production: 'Nord' Smooth Brome

The breeding portfolio of the A.G. Lorch Federal Potato Research Center extends beyond potatoes to include specialized forage crops. The 'Nord' smooth brome variety is the result of focused scientific efforts aimed at establishing a stable resource base for livestock farming. In an era of volatile weather patterns, this perennial grass has earned a reputation as a dependable source of green mass and hay.

Agronomic Profile and Purpose

Developed specifically for forage use, 'Nord' plays a vital role in crop rotation by providing a stable sward capable of rapid regeneration after multiple cuttings. The plant exhibits remarkable adaptability to various soil and climatic conditions, ensuring predictability for farm operations:

• Rapid regrowth capacity, essential for maximizing the number of cuttings per season.
• High leaf-to-stem ratio, which significantly boosts the nutritional value of hay and haylage.
• Strong winter hardiness, enabling the crop to survive harsh seasonal temperature fluctuations.

The reputation of this variety rests on its ability to deliver consistent yields even on moderately fertile soils, where other forage crops might struggle. The originator (Lorch Federal Potato Research Center) focused heavily on the longevity of the stand—'Nord' maintains its productivity within agricultural ecosystems over many years, consistently meeting projected yield benchmarks.

For agricultural enterprises, choosing 'Nord' is an investment in the long-term sustainability of forage production. Unlike transient annual mixes, 'Nord' develops a robust root system (sod) that not only yields high-quality forage but also enhances soil structure—an added advantage for agronomists prioritizing long-term land management.
