Alfalfa Southern Beauty

Adaptability and Performance in Arid Climates

The alfalfa variety "Pivdenna Krasunia" (Southern Beauty), developed by the Selection and Genetics Institute (Odesa, Ukraine), is a specialized solution for farmers operating in regions with significant climate risks. Unlike many foreign commercial varieties, this local breed is specifically selected for its resilience against heat stress and dry spells, which are common in the Ukrainian steppe zone.

Core Characteristics

• Plant Height: 80–100 cm, ensuring sufficient biomass yield while facilitating efficient harvesting.
• Regrowth Rate: Exhibits vigorous recovery after each cut, allowing for 3-4 harvests per season.
• Persistence: Shows high survival rates in stands, maintaining productivity for 3–4 years of cultivation.

The standout feature of "Pivdenna Krasunia" is its robust root system, which allows it to access deeper soil moisture compared to sensitive counterparts. This trait ensures that even during mid-summer heatwaves, the plant continues to produce high-protein green mass, making it a reliable crop for livestock operations that demand consistent feed quality without the need for expensive, intensive irrigation systems.

Is this variety right for your farm?

This variety is highly recommended for growers who prioritize long-term field stability and minimal input costs. It is notably resilient to spring frosts and winter damage. Pros: Excellent leaf-to-stem ratio, fast regrowth, and high resistance to lodging. Cons: Like most high-performing forage legumes, it requires precise timing for the cutting phase—delaying the harvest will lead to stem coarsening, which may diminish its nutritional value as animal feed.
