SERVICE

Service is a variety of perennial ryegrass (Festuca pratensis), widely distributed in temperate and subtropical climates. The grass features erect stems ranging from 10 to 120 cm in length, rough or hairy leaves up to 1.5 cm wide, providing a dense and thick mat. With its high biological mass (60–80 q/ha of hay, 200–300 q/ha of green mass), Service ryegrass is a valuable feed material for livestock and suitable as seeding material for high-quality lawns and decorative landscapes.

The crop is characterized by resilience to harsh winters and good soil drainage capability. It prefers loamy-sandy and loam soils with a light structure but grows successfully on cold and even saline soils due to its high leaf density. Seeding is done at a depth of 2–3 cm; precise seeding rate is 10–12 kg/100 g, manual seeding is 12–15 kg/120 g. With proper care, Service ryegrass ensures stable yield and high feed value.

Plant care is minimal: in the spring period, withered leaves are removed, and after flowering, the panicle is cut. Under unfavorable climate conditions, fungal infections and root system damage due to moisture are possible, however, the Service variety is usually resistant to most diseases. If necessary, fungicides and pesticides are applied to control rot, leaf spots, and root rot. Due to its durability and decorative qualities, Service ryegrass is widely used in both agriculture and landscape design, including sports lawns and pastures.
