Olschanka – is a perennial grass widely distributed around the world from cold to subtropical climates and even in mountain tropics. The plant has an upright stem 10–120 cm long, a root system with underground runners. Leaves are usually rough or hairy, leaflet width up to 1.5 cm, often rolled along the plane.
This culture is used as fodder and decorative: meadow fescue is the basis of pastures and hayfields; reed fescue tolerates saline soils. In landscape design, blue fescue is popular, known for its beautiful leaves.
Cultivation is carried out in hot, dry, well-lit places; prefers sunny areas and can grow on various soils – from dry rocky to sandy. Important conditions: good drainage, loose soil structure, presence of humus. Care is simple: removal of withered leaves in spring, cutting the panicle after flowering. Olschanka is frost-hardy, withstands severe winter conditions and can be used in lawns and decorative gardens.
