PENZENSKAIA 1 is a semi-highland oatgrass with a loose, strong tussocky structure, possessing a 'winter-hardy' development type. The clumps are upright and recover quickly after mowing: the average grass height over four cuts is about 58 cm, and plant abundance reaches 79%. This early-maturing grass has a vegetation period of 30–35 days from spring regrowth to the first cut, followed by similar intervals, until seed maturity – 85–92 days. High winter hardiness and drought tolerance allow it to be used in severe climatic conditions without frequent irrigation.
The variety is distinguished by its resistance to rust, smut, and pests, as well as a good response to nitrogen fertilization. With an average N240 application, the yield of green mass over four cuts averaged 35 t/ha over 10 years, dry matter – 8.9 t/ha, and seeds – 0.6 t/ha. Crude protein content in dry matter with nitrogen top-dressing ranges from 18–20%, while fiber content does not exceed 23–25%. These indicators make PENZENSKAIA 1 a valuable feed material for all types of livestock.
PENZENSKAIA 1 is widely used on intensive cultural meadows, pastures, and for greening lawns and parks. Due to its loose structure and high technological quality, it is easily mowed without stiff stems, ensuring easy lawn maintenance. The variety is also suitable for multi-year cultivation as a decorative lawn, thanks to its frost and short-term drought resistance, as well as a high level of protein content up to 79%.
For planting, it is recommended to use clay-loam soil or soil with neutral pH, free from weeds. Seeds are sown at a depth of 2–3 cm and with a row spacing of 20–25 cm. After mowing, the first irrigation must be provided, followed by 1–2 times per week. PENZENSKAIA 1 demonstrates excellent germination at 10–15 °C and large seed size, which promotes rapid growth and high yields up to 4–5 t/ha with proper care.
