Borneo oatgrass – this is a hybrid oat (Secale cereale) variety intended for cultivation in moderately subtropical regions and used as a grain crop, as well as a hay and forage plant. The variety is distinguished by high yield: under optimal conditions it can produce up to 4–5 t/ha, and with dense sowing – 1,200–1,400 t/ha. Large, dense seeds easily germinate and maintain quality during storage, which makes them convenient for mechanical processing.
Key agronomic characteristics include cold resistance (endures temperatures down to -10 °C) and drought resistance, as well as good resistance to various diseases: powdery mildew, powdery mildew, root system rot, and rust. With proper nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization, yield reaches its maximum, and grain quality remains high.
For successful cultivation, sowing is recommended at the end of March – early April at a density of 3–4 kg/m² (30-40 cm between rows). The soil should be fertile and well-drained with a pH of 5.5-7. Moderate irrigation in the first few weeks after sowing promotes rapid seed germination, which takes 7–10 days at a temperature of 12–18 °C. The «Borneo» variety is easily processed on mechanical machines and is suitable both for flour production and forage purposes due to its high protein content (13–15 %).
