Emerald

The Emerald Basil variety is a medium-maturing, heat-loving plant that can be grown both in open ground and in protected conditions, including greenhouses and containers on windowsills. The bushes are compact, reaching a height of up to 30 cm, have good branching, and form numerous glossy, bright green leaves of a rich emerald color. The optimal temperature for basil growth is from 20 to 25°C, and the vegetative period varies from 40 to 70 days depending on cultivation conditions. Seeds are sown by transplanting method in late March – early April, and direct sowing in greenhouse conditions is also possible. For successful seed germination, light is necessary, so they are only lightly covered with soil.

Emerald basil leaves have a pronounced aroma with notes of spicy pepper, slight bitterness, and a sweetish taste, which makes this variety particularly popular among cooks and gardeners. Young greens are collected before flowering, used in fresh form for preparing various dishes, as well as for canning, freezing, and drying. The yield of the variety reaches about 1 kg per square meter, which allows for effective use both for home consumption and for sale on the fresh market.

Growing Emerald basil requires light, humus-rich soils and regular watering, as young plants are quite demanding for moisture and develop slowly. When growing seedlings, it is recommended to transplant at the stage of 1-2 true leaves and pinch at 6-8 leaves to form more powerful bushes. Transplanting to open ground is carried out after the threat of night frosts has passed, with a planting density of about 20 plants per square meter. Due to its resistance to diseases and attractive appearance, Emerald basil is suitable not only for culinary use but also as a decorative plant.
