Description Opal
OPAL Basil, also known as Dark Opal, is a mid-season variety with dark purple, almost black leaves that add decorative elegance to plants with a rich spicy aroma featuring notes of anise and clove. This annual herbaceous bush reaches a height of 30 to 45 cm and a width of up to 70 cm, forming a spreading crown with large oval leaves. The basil flowers are small, white-pink, gathered in inflorescences, which further decorate the plant and make it attractive not only for culinary but also for decorative use.

Growing OPAL Basil is possible both in open ground and in greenhouse conditions or on balcony beds. For planting, it is recommended to use fertile soil with a neutral pH level and good drainage. Seeds are sown in soil warmed up to +10°C, and seedlings are planted after the establishment of warm weather with temperatures not lower than +15-18°C. The plant is relatively resistant to moisture deficiency, but in the initial growth stage requires regular watering and care. To obtain quality seedlings, seeds are sown two months before planting, while ensuring sufficient lighting for germination. Transplanting and pinching promote the formation of a compact and dense bush.

OPAL Basil is widely used in cooking due to its rich aroma and taste, reminiscent of clove with a slight bitterness. Leaves are suitable for adding to fresh and hot dishes, salads, beverages, and pickling, serving as a natural flavoring and spicy green. Additionally, the plant is valued for its content of essential oils, vitamins A, C, and K, as well as minerals possessing antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties. Due to its decorative nature and unpretentiousness, OPAL Basil is often grown as a houseplant or balcony plant.
