Barley Rek / Pek

Serbian Excellence: The IFVCNS Advantage

The «Rek / Pek» spring barley, developed by the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops (IFVCNS) in Novi Sad, Serbia, represents a top-tier choice for farmers seeking a balance between high-intensity performance and agronomic reliability. Known for their mastery in crop breeding, the Serbian experts have engineered a variety that thrives under diverse environmental pressures.

Technical Edge and Performance

The variety is defined by its compact architecture, with a plant height of 50–60 cm, which significantly reduces the risk of lodging. This structural strength allows for a more efficient harvest process. With a vegetation period of 80–90 days, it is a versatile option for various crop rotation models, ensuring optimal use of the spring moisture window.

• Disease Resistance: «Rek / Pek» possesses strong natural defenses against critical pathogens, including Helminthosporium, plant rusts, and powdery mildew. Its built-in resistance to loose smut and brown rust significantly lowers the need for intensive fungicide applications, supporting more sustainable farming practices.
• Grain Quality: With a thousand-grain weight of 46–48g and a crude protein content of 11–12%, this barley offers excellent grain quality, making it a valuable commodity for both feed and industrial processing.

Why Choose Rek/Pek?

What sets this variety apart is its impressive winter hardiness (rated 8–9), which provides a crucial buffer during spring temperature fluctuations. Unlike taller, less stable cultivars, this variety allocates its energy efficiently, focusing on kernel filling rather than excessive vegetative growth. It is designed for growers who prioritize reliability and high output per hectare. If you are looking for a variety that offers a predictable vegetative cycle combined with robust field health, the Novi Sad genetics provide a clear advantage in the field.
