Southern

Barley variety Southern is a cereal crop recommended for cultivation in forest-steppe and steppe zones. The vegetation period of this variety ranges from 76 to 84 days, and plant height varies between 63–73 cm. It belongs to the nutans variety and is characterized by a two-row ear type. It features high grain uniformity — 97.3%, ensuring uniform harvest and final product quality. Thousand-grain weight ranges from 45–52 grams, and protein content reaches 13.6%, which is an important indicator for food and feed value.

Southern exhibits high resistance to lodging and shattering, rated at 8 points, which reduces yield losses under adverse weather conditions. The potential yield of the variety reaches 8.0 tons per hectare, making it attractive for farmers seeking high productivity. The flour extraction rate from grain is 44.4%, indicating good raw material quality for processing.

The variety was developed by the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine and registered in 2001.
