The «Aizhan» spring barley variety, developed by the ISGP NAAS, is engineered for stable grain production within the climate zones of Ukraine. Understanding how plant morphology influences pathogen resistance and nutrient uptake efficiency is essential for precision farming.

Plant Architecture and Vegetation Cycle

The compact structure of the crop is maintained by a plant height of 50–60 cm. This engineering trait is intended to prevent lodging, which is critical for farms utilizing intensive nitrogen fertilization programs. With a vegetation period of 80–90 days, «Aizhan» is classified as a medium-early variety, allowing for the optimal utilization of soil moisture reserves during the vegetative stages prior to the onset of summer drought.

Phytosanitary Resistance

The genetic profile of the variety offers specific resistance to several key diseases:

• Loose Smut: possesses absolute resistance, eliminating yield loss risks related to this pathogen at the seed level.
• Disease Management: the variety exhibits high tolerance to helminthosporiosis, stem smut, and powdery mildew. This reduces the required frequency of fungicide applications, effectively lowering the cost of production.

Grain Quality Parameters

Of particular note are the biochemical metrics: the nitrogenous substance content in the dry matter is 12%. This parameter confirms the high biological value of the grain, making it valuable for both the feed industry and food processing.
