Shiny fescue is a perennial grass, and therefore the optimal time for sowing is early spring or late summer. Spring sowing allows the plants to establish strong roots before the onset of summer heat, ensuring sufficient soil moisture for seed germination.

Site preparation requires thorough surface leveling and weed removal, as young fescue seedlings are known for slow development in the first weeks. The seeding depth is typically 1.5–2 cm; planting deeper significantly reduces the germination rate.
The seeding rate depends on the intended use of the stand, but it generally varies from 12 to 16 kg per hectare for pure stands. Using seed drills with press wheels improves the chances of uniform emergence by ensuring better contact between seeds and the soil.
After emergence, light harrowing is recommended if the stand is not too dense, to break the soil crust. Shiny fescue responds well to nitrogen fertilization immediately after the appearance of the first true leaves.
When used in seed mixtures, the seeding rate of fescue should be reduced by 30–40% to prevent the suppression of other mixture components. This crop is characterized by high tillering, which allows it to cover the soil surface densely over time.
This species prefers moderately moist soils, avoiding areas with waterlogging or excessive drying. Shiny fescue shows good tolerance to various soil types, including loams and sufficiently fertile sandy loams.
The plant is light-loving; therefore, for maximum green mass production, it is not recommended to sow it in shaded areas or under the canopy of taller crops. The optimal soil pH is in the range of 5.5 to 7.0.
The crop has high winter hardiness, allowing it to be cultivated in regions with moderately cold winters without the risk of root system freezing. Its resistance to temperature fluctuations is due to the biological structure of the tillering node.
In prolonged drought conditions, the growth intensity of fescue decreases, but it is capable of rapid recovery after abundant rainfall. To maintain pasture productivity, a rotational grazing system is necessary.
An important success factor is the availability of sufficient nutrients, especially potassium and phosphorus, which strengthen cell walls and increase the overall endurance of the plants.
The main threats to Festuca lucida are fungal diseases, such as leaf rust, which actively develops during periods of high humidity. Timely mowing helps prevent the accumulation of the infectious background in the field.
Damage to the root system by wireworms and chafer larvae can negatively affect the density of the stand, especially on land recently converted from fallow. Monitoring pest populations is conducted through soil sampling.
Powdery mildew can also occur in crops, especially in dense plantings and with poor ventilation. The use of fungicides is justified only on seed production plots in cases of significant infection.
Aphids can damage young shoots in spring by sucking sap and inhibiting plant development. In cases of mass infestation, crops should be treated with insecticides in accordance with the regulatory use of the preparations.
To reduce the risk of infection, it is recommended to follow crop rotation and avoid monoculture on the same site for many years. Proper care and balanced nutrition are the best means of disease prevention.
Hay mowing is performed at the heading stage, when the plant contains the maximum amount of nutrients. Delayed harvesting leads to stem lignification and a decrease in the overall digestibility of the forage for livestock.
For seed production, harvesting is carried out during panicle maturity, when the seeds acquire a characteristic shine and hardness. It is important to avoid over-drying the panicles to prevent seed shattering in the field.
Drying the mowed biomass is carried out in swaths with periodic turning for uniform drying and to preserve the green color of the hay. High-quality hay should have a pleasant grassy aroma and a green hue.
After forage harvesting, it is advisable to clear the field of plant residues to ensure air access to the tillering node for successful overwintering. Late autumn mowing is not recommended as it depletes nutrient reserves in the roots.
