Boswellia is a genus belonging to the Burseraceae family, consisting of trees and shrubs native to the arid regions of Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and India. These plants are perfectly adapted to survive in extreme temperatures and low precipitation environments.

Successful cultivation requires high levels of solar radiation and warm climates throughout the year. The plant is extremely susceptible to moisture stress; therefore, it is vital to avoid regions with heavy or frequent rainfall, as waterlogging is lethal to the root system.

Well-drained, stony, or sandy soils with a neutral or slightly alkaline pH are ideal for Boswellia. These trees are highly resilient and capable of thriving in nutrient-poor environments where traditional agricultural crops would fail to survive.

Botanically, Boswellia is characterized by the presence of resin ducts in the bark. The root system is deep-reaching, allowing the tree to extract moisture from deep soil cracks and rock fissures, which is crucial for survival in arid conditions.

The primary economic value of the culture lies in the production of frankincense, a fragrant oleo-gum resin. Beyond its use in perfumes and religious ceremonies, the plant is a critical source of active compounds for the pharmaceutical industry, specifically for anti-inflammatory medications.

The main pests affecting Boswellia plantations include wood-boring beetles and certain weevils that target the bark. Regular field inspections are necessary to identify early signs of infestation and prevent large-scale damage to the trees.

Root rot caused by fungal pathogens is the most significant disease threat, typically resulting from poor soil drainage or excessive irrigation. Once root rot takes hold, it is difficult to treat, making preventative soil management a top priority.

Sustainable harvesting requires implementing mandatory rest periods for the trees to recover and replenish their internal resources. Over-harvesting leads to premature exhaustion of the tree and significantly degrades the quality of the resin produced.
