Benjamin fig (Ficus benjamina L.) is a tropical evergreen woody plant belonging to the Moraceae family. In its native habitat, it grows as a large tree with drooping branches and dense, dark green foliage that is highly valued for ornamental purposes.

The native range of this species extends throughout Southeast Asia, Northern Australia, and India. In modern agricultural practice, it is widely grown in commercial nurseries for the horticultural market and interior landscaping industry.

The plant requires bright, indirect light to thrive and maintain its shape. While it can adapt to lower light levels, prolonged shading often leads to leaf drop and a sparse, leggy crown, which significantly decreases its commercial market value.

The ideal temperature for cultivation ranges between 18°C and 25°C. Ficus benjamina is notoriously sensitive to sudden environmental changes, such as cold drafts or rapid temperature fluctuations, which trigger physiological leaf abscission.

A well-draining, nutrient-rich substrate is essential for healthy root development. Growers typically use peat-based mixtures with added perlite or bark to ensure aeration and prevent the waterlogging that often occurs in containerized production systems.

Spider mites are the most common pest, particularly in environments with low humidity. They thrive on the underside of leaves, causing yellowing and webbing, which can quickly lead to widespread plant defoliation if left untreated.

Scale insects and mealybugs also frequently infest Ficus benjamina, feeding on sap and excreting honeydew, which leads to sooty mold development. Integrated pest management (IPM) protocols are necessary to control these infestations effectively.

Root rot is the most significant disease, usually caused by overwatering or poor drainage. Pathogens such as Rhizoctonia or Phytophthora can decimate a crop in a short period, necessitating strictly monitored irrigation scheduling.

Fungal leaf spots, including those caused by Cercospora or Colletotrichum, appear as distinct necrotic lesions on leaves. Proper ventilation and avoiding overhead irrigation in enclosed spaces are critical cultural practices to mitigate disease spread.

Preventive maintenance includes keeping the foliage clean and inspecting new stock for signs of pests. Using appropriate horticultural oils or systemic insecticides at the first sign of trouble ensures the maintenance of high-quality standards in production.
