Originating primarily from the temperate regions of Europe, Asia, and North America, Irises have been cultivated for centuries. Their natural habitat varies from dry, rocky slopes to moist, marshy meadows, reflecting their high genetic adaptability. In agricultural practice, they are grown extensively in nurseries to produce high-quality rhizomes and cut flowers for global trade markets.

Botanically, the plant is characterized by creeping rhizomes or bulbs that act as storage organs. The leaves are typically ensiform (sword-shaped), emerging from the base in a fan-like arrangement. The flower structure is unique, featuring three drooping segments known as 'falls' and three upright segments known as 'standards,' which facilitate pollination by insects like bees and bumblebees.

The agronomic success of the Iris depends heavily on soil aeration and light availability. They thrive in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soils and require full sun to reach optimal bloom potential. Over-irrigation is a common pitfall; therefore, proper field leveling and soil amendment with sand or organic matter are essential to prevent root asphyxiation during the wet season.

Beyond horticulture, Irises hold economic significance in the perfume industry, particularly Iris pallida and Iris germanica. The rhizomes are harvested, dried, and aged to produce 'orris root,' a substance rich in irones used as a fixative in luxury fragrances. Additionally, they are used in erosion control due to their dense, fibrous root systems that stabilize topsoil.
