The family Phytoptidae belongs to the order Trombidiformes, containing mites known as Eriophyoids. These are extremely small, worm-like mites characterized by having only two pairs of legs, which distinguishes them from most other mite families. These pests affect a vast array of agricultural and horticultural crops, ranging from fruit trees like pears and grapes to ornamental shrubs. Because they feed by piercing plant cells and sucking out the contents, they can inject saliva that alters the plant's growth hormones, often leading to distinct morphological changes in the affected plant tissue.

The life cycle of Phytoptidae typically consists of an egg stage, two nymphal stages, and an adult stage. They overwinter in protected niches, such as under bud scales or bark crevices, and emerge as temperatures rise in the spring. Their reproductive potential is very high, allowing for multiple overlapping generations throughout the growing season.

Symptoms of infestation include the formation of galls, leaf blistering, severe curling, or "russeting" on fruit surfaces. These injuries directly impact the plant's ability to conduct photosynthesis, leading to stunted growth, reduced vigor, and poor fruit quality. Some species are also known vectors for various plant viruses, which can cause devastating economic losses.

Managing these mites is challenging due to their small size and hidden habits.
