Systematically, icterids belong to the order Passeriformes. They are highly adaptable birds with complex social structures and high levels of intelligence. This biological plasticity is exactly what makes them difficult to manage in an agricultural context, as they can quickly learn to navigate or ignore many standard deterrent systems implemented by growers.

Icterids predominantly damage cereal crops such as corn, rice, sorghum, and sunflowers. During the ripening phase, these birds feed on the developing seeds. By pecking through the husks of corn or the heads of sunflowers, they not only consume the grain but also expose the remaining crop to secondary damage from fungal pathogens and environmental factors, significantly reducing the market value of the harvest.

Their life cycle involves seasonal migratory patterns and distinct breeding seasons. While they act as insectivores during parts of the year, providing some ecological balance, their diet shifts drastically during the late summer and autumn when they rely heavily on cultivated grains. Their ability to congregate in thousands makes their impact on local agriculture immediate and severe.
