Land planarians

Land planarians (family Geoplanidae, order Tricladida) are a group of predatory flatworms that inhabit the soil and leaf litter. While they are natural predators, certain invasive species have become notorious as serious environmental pests because they prey on earthworms, which are essential for maintaining soil structure, aeration, and nutrient cycling in both natural and agricultural ecosystems.

This pest poses a significant threat to soil health, which indirectly affects various horticultural and ornamental crops. By preying on earthworms, land planarians disrupt the soil biological community. Consequently, plants grown in infested areas often suffer from nutrient deficiency, poor drainage, and compacted soil, which hinders root expansion and overall development.

The biology of these worms is marked by hermaphroditic reproduction and exceptional regenerative abilities. They lay eggs in cocoons that are resilient to various environmental stressors. Their activity is highly dependent on moisture levels; therefore, greenhouses, nurseries, and humid gardens serve as high-risk environments for population explosions of these predatory worms.

The damage caused by land planarians is primarily ecological, leading to the collapse of the soil food web. The reduction of earthworm populations causes the soil to harden, which prevents oxygen from reaching roots and slows down the decomposition of organic matter. This leaves plants stunted and more prone to secondary infections from soil-borne pathogens.

Management and protection strategies include:

  • Rigorous inspection of imported soil, pots, and ornamental plant materials.
  • Manual removal of visible specimens during early morning or evening when they are most active.
  • Removal of potential hiding spots such as piles of debris, rotting wood, or damp garden waste.
  • Monitoring soil health by tracking earthworm activity as a primary indicator of soil quality.
  • Applying physical barriers or desiccants in localized areas where infestation is detected.
