Originator — Institute of Plant Growing named after V. Ya. Yuryev, NAAN.
Year of inclusion in the State Register of Plant Varieties of Ukraine — 2005, recommended for cultivation in the Steppe and Forest-Steppe zones of Ukraine.
Trial characteristics: variety erythrospermum. Stem with medium waxy coating on upper internodes. Ear with weak waxy coating, spindle-shaped, 8-9 cm long, medium density. Awns long (10 cm), serrated, after anthesis they have anthocyanic coloration. Grain red, medium size, oval shape with broad hairy awn. Anthers have anthocyanic coloration. 1000-grain weight 39-43 g.
Biological features: mid-maturing variety, earing and ripening occur within standard timeframes, short-stemmed (plant height 79-85 cm), resistant to lodging. Stem slender, has good branching and can form 700+ productive tillers per m2. Winter hardiness increased — 8.2-8.7 points. Tolerant to major diseases in field conditions.
Agronomic characteristics: intensive type variety. Potential yield 9.5 t/ha. High and stable yield, in the institute’s competitive variety trials it averaged 7.9 t/ha. Over three years, average yield in the Steppe zone was 5.44 t/ha after poor predecessors and 6.35 t/ha — after good ones. In the Forest-Steppe zone, yield was 6.35 t/ha and 6.84 t/ha, exceeding the average standard by 18-23%. At the DPAG 'Askaniyskoye' in Kherson Oblast under irrigation, yield reached 9.68 t/ha. According to the State Commission, the variety Astet is classified as a strong wheat in the Steppe and Forest-Steppe zones of Ukraine. Grain, depending on location and growing conditions, contains 12.4-14.5% protein and 25-29.9% gluten, flour strength 280-431 o.a., loaf volume 660 cm3.
Agronomic requirements: the variety must be grown using intensive technology, with black fallow as the best preceding crop and optimal doses of mineral fertilizers. To achieve high yields, plants must also be protected from pests using insecticides such as Danadim and Boray, and from diseases using fungicides Folikur and Falcon, especially after heading. Seeds should be treated with a fungicide in combination with an insecticide before sowing. Reaction to sowing timing is normal. Seed sowing rate: 4.5 million germinating seeds per ha after fallow, 5.0 million after non-fallow predecessors.
