Description
Sea buckthorn «Botanical Amateur» is a technical, high-yielding, early-maturing variety of universal purpose. Bushes of medium height reach 4 m in height and 3 m in width, having a pyramidal or round-pyramidal crown shape. Leaves are large, light green, strongly pubescent, and on the upper part of shoots medium amount of thorns are located.
Fruits of this variety are large – from 0.70 to 0.85 g, elongated-oval shape, orange-yellow with a dense skin. They are juicy and sour, have a bright aroma, and when ripening at the end of August easily separate from crumbling dry detachment. Average yield is 7–15 kg/bush, but under favorable conditions the plant can yield up to 20 kg of berries in the fifth year of life.
For successful fruiting, a male pollinator variety is required. The variety withstands strong frosts well and is resistant to many diseases and pests, however it is sensitive to endomycosis and wilting. It prefers sunny places with fertile, drained soils – loamy or sandy, does not tolerate stagnant moisture and close groundwater. Frost resistance reaches zone 4 a (up to −31.7 °C), which makes it suitable for the central belt of Central Russia and other cold regions.
