Sea buckthorn AUGUSTINA

Technical Profile of «Avgustina» Sea Buckthorn

The breeding efforts of FANCA in developing the «Avgustina» variety have focused on overcoming the primary challenges of commercial and amateur horticulture: harvesting complexity and fruit organoleptic qualities. Unlike wild forms, this variety is the result of targeted selection where shoot morphology is a critical success factor.

The Advantage of Thornless Shoots

The defining technical feature of «Avgustina» is the complete absence of thorns on the shoots. From an agronomic perspective, this is not merely a matter of convenience; it is a fundamental design solution that prevents fruit damage during harvest. In standard varieties, micro-abrasions from thorns lead to juice leakage and premature spoilage. By eliminating thorns, the fruit skin remains intact, ensuring superior marketability and extended shelf life.

Biological Indicators and Yield

The agronomic potential of this variety allows for yields of up to 15–20 kg from a single mature bush. Each berry weighs between 0.9 and 1.2 g, an optimal range for commercial quality. The bright orange color is indicative of high carotenoid concentration.

• Flavor Profile: A sweet, dessert-like taste with a mild, pleasant acidity. Designed specifically for fresh consumption.
• Resilience: The variety demonstrates high adaptive capacity to various climatic conditions, embedded in its genetic foundation by the originator.
• Ornamental Value: The plant maintains a high aesthetic appeal throughout the growing season, making it a functional addition to any landscape design.

In summary, «Avgustina» from FANCA represents a balanced solution for those prioritizing high yield per square meter with minimal time investment in maintenance and harvesting.
