Ryegrass Elunaria

An Engineering Approach to Grass Cover: The Potential of "Elunaria"

Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) "Elunaria" from the plant breeding house Deutsche Saatveredelung is the result of intensive selection aimed at creating high-growing, dense biomass with superior regenerative capacity. The variety demonstrates unique plasticity: its morphological characteristics allow it to be used both in high-yield forage production and in the formation of wear-resistant turf surfaces.

The Biological Architecture of the Variety

The key feature of "Elunaria" lies in the balance between growth rates and tillering density. The height of the reproductive shoots, reaching 70–100 cm, is driven by the plant's intense metabolism, making it highly efficient for hay and silage production. However, for agronomists working with lawns and sports facilities, another parameter is more critical—the capacity for active lateral shoot formation.

• Sports Adaptability: In conditions of sports turf where instant "repair" capacity is necessary, this variety provides dense root intertwining, which minimizes divot formation under mechanical stress.
• Forage Quality: The height of the plant correlates with high dry matter yield. Due to the selection process carried out by Deutsche Saatveredelung, "Elunaria" maintains its nutritional value even during periods of intensive growth.
• Growth Energy: Low temperatures are not a critical barrier to germination, a hallmark of the German breeding school, which is adapted to the climatic conditions of Central and Northern Europe.

The practical value of choosing this variety lies in its versatility in sward management. Depending on the mowing regime, "Elunaria" either directs its energy toward leaf mass volume (forage application) or turf density (sports/lawn application). This makes it an economically sound solution for operations that combine livestock farming with landscape management.
