Onion Russkoye Zastolye

Managing 'Russkoye Zastolye' Bunching Onion Crops

For growers specializing in scallions or salad-type onions, the selection of the right cultivar is the foundation of operational efficiency. Developed by Gavrish and VNIISSOK, 'Russkoye Zastolye' is a reliable bunching onion that simplifies the daily routine of field management and harvesting.

Field Operations and Maintenance

With a maturity period of 90–100 days, this variety allows for predictable production scheduling. The crop features a uniform plant structure, which is crucial for efficient manual harvesting. Because the leaves grow vertically rather than sprawling, workers spend significantly less time navigating the rows, leading to faster throughput during the peak harvest season.

Operational Advantages

• Harvest Ergonomics: The uniform vertical habit makes manual cutting smooth and fast, reducing labor costs per hectare.
• Market Distinction: The characteristic red color at the base of the stem acts as a visual signature, helping the product stand out on supermarket shelves against standard green varieties.
• Durability: The leaves are dense and retain their turgor well after harvest, which minimizes shrinkage and wastage during transportation and retail display.

Maintenance is straightforward: the variety requires consistent moisture management and standard pest control protocols. Because of its predictable growth, 'Russkoye Zastolye' fits well into rotation schedules, and with proper nutrition, it offers excellent regeneration potential, allowing for repeated cycles if managed correctly. It is a workhorse variety for those who value consistency and ease of handling over complex, high-maintenance genetics.
