Onion Russian Winter

Consistent greens harvest in any weather

The "Russky Zimny" variety, developed by the Russian Research Institute of Vegetable Breeding and Seed Production (VNIISSOK), is a classic choice for professional growers seeking high-quality bunching onion (scallions). Its primary value lies in its ability to provide the farm with fresh, vitamin-rich greens immediately after the snow melts, precisely when the market faces a shortage of fresh produce.

Field performance and practical application

This variety is tailored for perennial greens production. In industrial-scale operations, agronomists prioritize it for the following technical traits:

• High frost resistance: The variety overwinters successfully even in regions with harsh climates without requiring complex protection.
• Vigorous growth: The foliage emerges uniformly, displaying a dark green color with a characteristic waxy bloom, which enhances its market appeal.
• Bolting resistance: "Russky Zimny" retains its tenderness longer, resisting premature fiber buildup at the start of the season.

In practice, this variety serves as an ideal tool for staggered harvest cycles. Establishing permanent beds allows for 2–3 full harvests per growing season. Due to its excellent regenerative capacity, the plants recover rapidly after each cutting. Utilizing "Russky Zimny" minimizes weather-related risks, as it reliably yields even during late spring frosts, which is essential for capturing early-season market windows.

Economic impact

Opting for this VNIISSOK variety is a strategic move for producers focused on steady supply chains to retail outlets. The reduced need for annual crop replanting and high yields per square meter make "Russky Zimny" a robust asset for open-field vegetable production systems.
