Oats are distinguished by high cold hardiness: seeds germinate at a temperature of only 1-2 °C, and seedlings withstand spring frosts down to -3-5 °C and even lower. Moreover, oats are effectively used as green manure, improving soil structure and increasing its fertility by releasing easily assimilated potassium. They are especially useful on acidic and peat soils, where oat roots release substances that prevent the development of root rot and also suppress the growth of weeds.
