Lettuce Green moon

Technological potential of 'Green Moon' lettuce

French breeding by Vilmorin-Mikado in the iceberg segment demonstrates a highly specialized approach to field production challenges. The 'Green Moon' variety features a balanced genetic structure adapted for high-quality yields during early maturation periods. The hybrid’s success relies on a robust immune framework that minimizes the need for heavy fungicide application.

Agrotechnical features and resistance

The primary challenge addressed by breeders in creating this hybrid was overcoming the major phytopathological risks associated with intensive vegetable farming:

• Phytosanitary barrier: High genetic resistance to downy mildew (Bremia lactucae) eliminates the problem of premature lower leaf necrosis, which is critical for maintaining marketable head appearance.
• Viral control: Resistance to Lettuce Mosaic Virus (LMV) ensures stable plant development even in high-pressure environments typical of intensive crop rotation zones.
• Head architecture: The medium head weight and deep dark green leaf color result from selective breeding for density and commercial appeal. The tight structure provides excellent shelf life and transportability, distinguishing 'Green Moon' from other early varieties.

The practical value of these characteristics is clear: farmers receive predictable results with an early market entry. The dark green leaf color is not only retail-friendly but also indicates high chlorophyll accumulation, which, combined with early maturation, allows for maximum light utilization early in the season. This model is optimal for operations focused on continuous, high-quality iceberg lettuce production.
