Smooth brome Siretska

Optimizing Feed Production with 'Syretska' Brome Grass

The 'Syretska' smooth brome, developed by the M.M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden, is a highly regarded variety in Ukrainian agriculture, specifically engineered for intensive forage production. With yields reaching 8–10 tons of hay per hectare, it serves as a reliable cornerstone for livestock operations aiming for long-term self-sufficiency in forage.

For agricultural producers, 'Syretska' is not just a crop, but a strategic tool for field management. Its deployment covers several core practical scenarios:

• Long-term hay meadows: Thanks to its robust root system, this variety exhibits rapid regrowth after cutting, ensuring consistent high yields for 5–7 years without the need for frequent reseeding.
• High-quality pasture management: Its excellent palatability and regrowth vigor make it an ideal choice for dairy and beef cattle, translating pasture quality into improved feed efficiency.
• Soil conservation: Due to its dense root mat, 'Syretska' is frequently used to establish permanent ground cover on slopes, effectively preventing soil erosion while generating forage output.

Practical field observations suggest that this variety performs optimally in fertile, well-hydrated soils, where it demonstrates significant resilience to fluctuating spring temperatures common in the region. To maximize nutritional value, especially protein content, harvesting should be timed carefully—ideally at the onset of panicle emergence. By integrating 'Syretska' into their crop rotation, farm managers significantly reduce the operational costs associated with annual tillage and forage establishment, securing a dependable feed source for the years ahead.
