The smooth brome grass variety «SIBNIISHOZ 189» is mid-ripening, characterized by high fodder and seed productivity, as well as excellent plasticity. The vegetation period to the first cutting lasts 45‑56 days, from the first to the second – 55‑60 days, and to seed maturity – 90‑110 days. Thanks to a powerful tufted root system and deep soil penetration ability, the plant demonstrates high winter hardiness and drought resistance, ensuring good regrowth in spring and after cuttings. On irrigated plots, the variety can yield up to three cuttings and shows increased responsiveness when irrigated.
Physical characteristics include a dense multi-stemmed bush 100‑140 cm high with erect stems. Leaves are linear-lanceolate, 16 to 45 cm long and 0.5‑2.5 cm wide, have a slightly rough surface and fully closed sheaths. The inflorescence is a panicle 20‑35 cm long with a large number of spikelets (25‑35), slightly drooping; during flowering it becomes spreading with bright yellow pollen. Spikelets are linear-lanceolate in shape, up to 5 cm in size, multi-flowered (5‑10 flowers) and grayish-purple.
Seeds of the variety are strongly flattened, 8‑12 mm long, 2.5‑3.0 mm wide, non-shattering, light gray with a purple tint. The mass of 1000 seeds is 2.5‑4.0 g. The dry mass contains about 11.9% protein and 34.8% fiber. The variety demonstrates medium resistance to rust infection and high overall disease resistance. Thanks to these properties, «SIBNIISHOZ 189» is suitable for both fodder mass production and seed production, providing a stable yield even under unfavorable climatic conditions.
