Smooth brome is a perennial herb widely used as fodder grass and in landscape design. Plant height reaches up to 100 cm, and the root system penetrates deeper than two meters, providing drought and flooding resistance. Leaf blades are dark green, 3 to 40 cm long, and have high leafiness – 1 kg of green mass contains 0.21 feed units, while the same amount of hay contains 0.48 units, making smooth brome a valuable source of protein and fiber for livestock.
The crop is distinguished by excellent productivity: average yield of green mass is about 23–24 t/ga, and dry matter output is 8.9–10 t/ga. Under optimal conditions, hay can be obtained up to 45 centners per hectare without irrigation and up to 60 centners with irrigation. Seed productivity reaches 0.16–0.20 t/ga, confirming its potential as a precursor for grain crops.
Smooth brome is easily cultivated in various climatic conditions – from temperate to subtropical regions. Thanks to its strong root system, it improves soil structure, increasing permeability and retaining moisture, and also suppresses weeds. As a multi-year pasture, it maintains high fodder value even in poor years, and when used in lawns and land reclamation, it provides stable coverage and decorative appearance thanks to large inflorescences–panicles. Varieties «Siberian 7», «Morshansky 760» and breeding sample 4-2-20 demonstrate high yield, resistance to lodging, and technological suitability for hay-meadow-pasture use.
