Smooth brome Discovery

Engineering Solutions in DLF 'Discovery' Bromegrass Breeding

Smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis) variety 'Discovery' from the Danish seed company DLF is the result of targeted breeding aimed at creating turf with high shoot density and resistance to abiotic stress. Unlike wild populations, 'Discovery' exhibits a distinct root development dynamic, which is a critical factor for long-lasting lawns and land reclamation projects.

Morphological Stability and Root System Development

The key technical feature of 'Discovery' lies in the structure of its rhizomes. DLF breeders have optimized the balance between vegetative reproduction and above-ground biomass. The variety's root system is characterized by active branching, which provides:

• Formation of a dense sod that prevents soil erosion even on slopes.
• Rapid regeneration following mechanical damage or intensive traffic.
• High drought tolerance due to deep penetration of roots into soil horizons, making it a preferred choice for regions with limited moisture.

Agronomic Advantages for Landscaping

Choosing 'Discovery' for landscaping is driven by its biological plasticity. The variety demonstrates excellent adaptation to various soil types, including sandy and heavy loam soils. An important technical parameter is leaf physiology: the 'Discovery' variety shows a slowed growth rate in height following the initial cut, significantly reducing the frequency of mowing required. The density of the turf prevents active weed encroachment, as the aggressive rhizomes of 'Discovery' effectively outcompete other species, creating a uniform stand.

In urban landscaping, the variety exhibits high tolerance to air pollution and soil compaction. It is not merely a decorative solution but a functional tool for creating stable green zones that require minimal intervention once established.
