Fescue Zlata

Practical insights on cultivating 'Zlata' meadow fescue

For agronomists managing fodder production, the primary criteria for selecting meadow fescue are not just yield, but reliability and predictability within the crop rotation. The 'Zlata' variety, developed by the Ural Federal Agrarian Research Center, demonstrates exceptional adaptability to challenging climatic conditions, proving itself to be a dependable asset for field operations.

Operational performance

In the field, 'Zlata' exhibits consistent growth patterns. When establishing pastures or hayfields, the variety provides uniform emergence and rapid sward development. Key aspects for operators to consider include:

• Nutrient response: The fescue efficiently converts mineral fertilizers into high-protein fodder, allowing for precise planning of intensive mowing cycles.
• Winter hardiness: The crop successfully withstands harsh climatic cycles, maintaining a dense root mat and sward integrity even after extreme temperature fluctuations.
• Regrowth speed: Field observations confirm rapid regenerative potential following each cut, which simplifies the coordination of harvesting schedules.

Harvesting recommendations

The optimal harvest window for 'Zlata' occurs during the heading stage. This phase ensures the best balance between biomass volume and nutritional value. Operators should note that the variety features ideal leafiness, which enhances the efficiency of forage harvesters and reduces drying time in windrows. The high density of the sward minimizes mechanical harvesting losses, ensuring uniform and high-quality silage or hay production.

Integrating this variety into your operations allows you to significantly mitigate the risks of sward depletion in climatically unstable zones, securing a stable feed base for livestock for many years without the need for frequent reseeding.
