Description VALDAI
Valdai Oatgrass (Festuca valesiaca) – a perennial herbaceous plant in the grass family, reaching heights from 40 to 80 cm and forming a dense carpet of thin leaves. The leaves have a blue-green tint, are 30–50 cm long and 0.3–0.6 mm wide, grow vertically, and create an elegant texture in the landscape.

This grass prefers sunny or semi-shaded areas with light, drained soils – sandy, clayey, or loose fertile soil. It withstands moderate moisture well and can grow during dry summer periods, though roots may suffer from fungal infections under overwatering.

Valdai Oatgrass is an excellent decorative lawn, edging, or groundcover. Its small white or light-pink inflorescences appear in June–July and add a picturesque accent, although the main attention is drawn to the dense green crown. The plant is resistant to winters of moderate climates (zone 5A), withstanding temperatures down to –29 °C.

Care for oatgrass is simple: regular watering during the active growth period, moderate fertilization with nitrogenous preparations, and pruning after flowering to maintain crown density. Pests may include aphids, caterpillars, and mites; diseases – fungal infections and bacterial root damage. Proper drainage and timely removal of infected parts help prevent the spread of diseases.

In the garden, Valdai Oatgrass serves as a decorative grass in parks, gardens, and urban landscapes, and can also be used in group compositions. At the same time, it remains a popular choice for those who value durability, ease of care, and aesthetic appeal of perennial grasses.
