Cochia arboricola is an annual ornamental foliage plant, reaching heights from 60 to 80 cm, which fully blooms by July and forms dense bushes resembling real cypresses. The leaves are narrow, small, and hairy, bright green in early summer, gradually transitioning to reddish hues in autumn. The flowers are small, gathered in spike-like inflorescences, but they are not the main decorative element.
The plant prefers bright and sun-loving conditions, grows well on fertile soils, withstands both partial shade and direct sun. Thanks to its moderate drought tolerance, cochia can be used in open ground even with limited watering. Sowing seeds is done directly into the open ground in May or via seedlings – in April/March-April, after which plants are thinned to a distance of 30–50 cm.
Cochia is easily trimmed and modeled, making it ideal for creating hedges, borders, flower beds, and mixed borders. When planted in groups or as individual plants, it retains its decorative qualities throughout the season, and the autumn transition of leaves adds bright red accents to the landscape design.
