Koehia is an annual plant from the amaranth family, growing quickly and forming dense bushes up to 1.5 m high. Thanks to its small narrow leaves, it resembles a small cypress, and in the autumn period it turns a bright red-carmine color, which makes it attractive for decorative gardening.
For successful cultivation, koehia prefers sunny places and light, water-permeable soils with a neutral or weakly alkaline reaction. The plant is drought and heat resistant, but does not tolerate sharp temperature fluctuations. During the vegetation period, the soil must be loosened regularly, weeds removed, and fertilized – twice: 10 days after planting and after a month.
Koehia is widely used as a border, hedge, or accent in flower beds thanks to its decorativeness from spring to late autumn. It is easily shaped, which allows creating various landscape compositions. Reproduction is carried out by seeds from early May to mid-summer; with proper care, the plant quickly reaches full height and maintains bright leaf color.
