Description Shans
Shans meadow clover is a bi-cropped, diploid variety of red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) with pink inflorescences. The plants have an erect or semi-erect bush, stems of medium height and thickness with a moderate number of internodes and weak pubescence. Leaves are of medium size, with a moderate number of plants having white markings. Seeds are multicolored, with a 1000-seed mass ranging from 1.9 to 2.1 grams. The variety belongs to early-maturing types, with a vegetative period of 55 to 126 days, ensuring early and medium flowering and seed maturation times. Shans is characterized by high winter hardiness, reaching 96-100%, which allows for successful cultivation in the Northern, Northwestern, and Volga-Vyatsk regions. The variety demonstrates resistance to root rots and anthracnose at the level of standards, which contributes to maintaining plant health and stable yields. The average yield of dry matter in the Volga-Vyatsk region is 68.3 centners per hectare, exceeding the standard average by 3.8 centners, while the maximum yield reaches 139.3 centners per hectare. The maximum collection of dry matter over two crops can reach 212 centners per hectare. Shans clover is a high-quality feed with a protein content of approximately 15.82% and fiber content of 26.88% in the first crop. The total protein content in the plant reaches 17.7%, and fiber content is 27.4%, ensuring a high level of nutritional value. The average protein collection is 5.9 centners per hectare. Thanks to these characteristics, the variety is widely used in agriculture for feeding animals and also has application in folk medicine as a medicinal plant.
