TAMBOVSKOE

The Tambovskoe apple variety is an autumn variety bred by breeders of the Central Chernozem Laboratory named after I.V. Michurin. This variety was obtained by crossing the Sklyanka Kurskaya and Belyy naliv apple trees. The tree is vigorous with a round-spreading canopy of medium density, shoots are straight, brownish and moderately hairy. Leaves are large, green, smooth and shiny, and flowers are light pink. Fruit-bearing begins in the fourth-fifth year after planting and is concentrated on ringlets and long fruit spurs.

The fruits of the Tambovskoe variety are large, uniform, elongated or oval-conical in shape with ribbing towards the apex. Their surface is smooth, the main color is light green with bright red blurred stripes and speckles on a pink background. The flesh is white, fine-grained, juicy and tender with a sour-sweet taste and a delicate aroma. The average fruit weight is about 180 grams, maximum reaches 350 grams. Fruits ripen in mid-September and can be stored for about a month, while the content of soluble dry matter reaches 14.6 %, sugars — 12.2 %, ascorbic acid — 12.8 mg per 100 grams.

The variety is characterized by high winter hardiness and good yield, which is approximately 25.6 tons per hectare, however, pronounced periodicity of fruit-bearing is noted. Among the disadvantages is weak resistance to scab. The taste qualities of the fruits are highly rated, which makes the Tambovskoe apple tree attractive for cultivation in the Central Chernozem and Volga regions.
