Cycadaceae

A cycad is an ancient gymnosperm belonging to the family Cycadaceae. This relic group is often referred to as "living fossils" because they have maintained their external appearance virtually unchanged since the Mesozoic Era. In agriculture and decorative horticulture, they are valued for their unique aesthetics and resistance to adverse environmental factors.

The native range of cycads includes tropical and subtropical regions of the planet, such as Southeast Asia, Africa, and Australia. On a commercial or amateur scale, they are grown in warm-climate regions, while in temperate latitudes, they are primarily cultivated in closed environments or greenhouses. The crop is extremely sensitive to sudden temperature fluctuations and requires protection from direct frost.

Botanically, a cycad is a plant with a robust, often column-shaped trunk and a crown of stiff, pinnate leaves. It is a dioecious plant, meaning that there are separate male and female individuals. The growth of the plants is extremely slow, which is a critical factor to consider when planning intensive nursery production of plant material.

Agronomic requirements include providing excellent soil drainage, as stagnant moisture is fatal to the root system. The soil mix should be slightly acidic, rich in organic matter, and well-aerated. Plants require moderate irrigation during the growing season and significant moisture restriction during the dormancy period. Fertilization is carried out using specialized fertilizers with a low nitrogen content.

The economic use of cycads is limited to their decorative value and the potential toxicity of their tissues. In some cultures, the starchy core of the stems was historically consumed as food after complex multi-stage processing to remove toxic compounds; however, in modern agriculture, the plant is cultivated exclusively for landscaping and interior design.

Typical diseases and pests include:

  • Scale insects and mealybugs that infest the leaf blades.
  • Spider mites, which become active in low humidity conditions.
  • Root rot, usually resulting from soil waterlogging.
  • Leaf spot caused by temperature regime disruptions.
