Botanically, the trunk of a Cyatheaceae fern is not true wood but a fibrous structure composed of adventitious roots and vascular bundles. At the top of the trunk, a crown of large, finely divided fronds emerges. These fronds are produced continuously under favorable conditions and are responsible for the plant's photosynthesis and the production of spores, which are typically found in small, rounded structures known as sori.

To successfully cultivate tree ferns, one must replicate their humid, forest-like environment. The growing medium should be porous, acidic, and rich in organic matter. A key aspect of their care is moisture management: the trunk itself often needs to be kept damp to support the plant's health, and the ambient humidity should be kept consistently high to prevent frond desiccation.

They are highly prized in landscape design for their prehistoric aesthetic and are central features in botanical gardens, conservatories, and upscale garden projects. Some species have historical uses in local medicine or as a substrate, though strict regulations often govern their trade and extraction to protect wild populations.

Cultivation challenges often involve susceptibility to pests such as mealybugs, scale insects, and spider mites. Due to the sensitivity of the fronds, heavy-duty pesticides are rarely recommended. Instead, integrated pest management practices, including mechanical removal of pests and environmental control, are favored by horticulturists to maintain the health and vigor of these iconic plants.
