Description
How to identify
Trogoxylon impressum belongs to the family Bostrichidae within the order Coleoptera. It is a small beetle characterized by an elongated, cylindrical body, typically dark brown or nearly black in color.
The head of the insect is hidden under the pronotum, which features distinct sculpting. Adult specimens usually range from 2.5 to 4 millimeters in length. The larvae have a whitish appearance, a curved body shape, and powerful mouthparts adapted for boring into tough wood tissue.
What it damages
The primary food source for this pest is the dry wood of deciduous trees. In natural environments, it often infests weakened trees, branches, or deadwood, but it poses the greatest threat to harvested timber and wood products.
The pest is frequently found in warehouses, sawmills, and residential structures if inadequately dried or infested wood was used during construction. It specifically damages products made from oak, ash, walnut, and other valuable hardwood species.
When it appears
Adult beetle emergence typically occurs during the warmer months, from late spring through late summer. In heated indoor environments, the life cycle may continue year-round, making the insect extremely dangerous to stored timber supplies.
Females deposit their eggs directly into cracks in the wood or into existing exit holes. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately begin excavating winding tunnels deep within the material, gradually moving through the wood layers as they feed and grow.
Signs of infestation
The primary external indicator of an infestation is the presence of small, circular exit holes on the wood surface. These holes are typically 1 to 1.5 millimeters in diameter, corresponding to the size of the emerging adult beetles.
Near these holes, one can often observe "wood flour," which is the fine, sawdust-like powder that larvae push out while excavating their tunnels. The accumulation of this powder is a clear sign that the interior structure of the material is being actively destroyed.
Control measures
Effective control of Trogoxylon impressum relies on the deep impregnation of wood with specialized insecticidal and antiseptic treatments. Kiln drying of timber before use is essential, as it effectively kills all life stages of the beetle.
In warehouse settings, maintaining proper humidity and temperature control is crucial, along with periodic fumigation. Heavily infested items should be discarded or subjected to heat treatment methods to ensure complete disinfestation of the wood structure.
