Affected crops: Cockroaches are opportunistic feeders. In greenhouse settings, they may target a variety of plants, especially seedlings, delicate foliage, young succulent shoots, and flowers. Orchids, ferns, and various vegetable starters are particularly vulnerable to their feeding habits during night hours.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of three stages: egg, nymph, and adult. Females deposit eggs in protective cases called oothecae. They undergo incomplete metamorphosis. Their preference for dark, damp, and warm environments makes greenhouses ideal habitats, allowing them to complete their life cycles rapidly throughout the year.
Nature of damage: The damage is primarily mechanical, as cockroaches feed on the epidermis and parenchyma of leaves, leaving irregular holes or jagged margins. Furthermore, they are significant vectors for various pathogens, including bacteria and fungi, which can enter the plant tissues through the wounds caused by their mandibles, leading to secondary rot.
Protection measures: Management of cockroach populations requires a combination of sanitation and strategic control:
- Eliminate food sources by removing decaying plant debris and organic waste.
- Implement rigorous monitoring using sticky traps to identify hotspots.
- Apply specialized gel baits in areas where chemicals would be too risky for plant health.
- Seal structural gaps in greenhouses to minimize entry points and nesting sites.
