Plataspidae is a family of true bugs belonging to the order Hemiptera. These insects are easily identified by their rounded, globular body shape and a large, wide scutellum that covers the entire abdomen and wings. Plataspidae

These pests primarily target legume crops, causing substantial economic losses. Their host range includes soybeans, beans, peas, lentils, and chickpeas. Beyond agricultural crops, they heavily infest kudzu and other wild legumes, which serve as permanent reservoirs that allow the pest population to flourish and spread into cultivated fields.

The life cycle of Plataspidae consists of eggs, five nymphal instars, and adults. Female bugs lay eggs in two parallel rows on the underside of leaves. Depending on the geographical region and ambient temperature, these insects can complete multiple generations per year, leading to rapid population explosions that require immediate management during critical plant growth stages.

The damage caused by Plataspidae is primarily due to their feeding behavior. They use piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on the sap of stems, leaves, and reproductive parts of the plant. Heavy infestations cause stunting, flower drop, pod abortion, and significant yield reductions. Additionally, their excrement can lead to secondary fungal infections, further damaging the crop quality.

Effective control strategies require an integrated approach:

  • Systematic application of registered insecticides targeting early nymphal stages.
  • Cultural control, including the removal of kudzu patches and other wild hosts near agricultural areas.
  • Biological control using native parasitoids and entomopathogenic fungi.
  • Consistent field monitoring to determine the appropriate timing for pesticide application based on population density thresholds.
