Plataspidae
These pests primarily target legume crops, causing substantial economic losses. Their host range includes soybeans, beans, peas, lentils, and chickpeas. Beyond agricultural crops, they heavily infest kudzu and other wild legumes, which serve as permanent reservoirs that allow the pest population to flourish and spread into cultivated fields.
The life cycle of Plataspidae consists of eggs, five nymphal instars, and adults. Female bugs lay eggs in two parallel rows on the underside of leaves. Depending on the geographical region and ambient temperature, these insects can complete multiple generations per year, leading to rapid population explosions that require immediate management during critical plant growth stages.
The damage caused by Plataspidae is primarily due to their feeding behavior. They use piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on the sap of stems, leaves, and reproductive parts of the plant.
