Pokrovskaya wheat is a winter variety of soft wheat developed by the Selection-Genetic Institute of the National Center for Seed Production and Variety Evaluation in Odessa. The variety is medium-maturing with a vegetation period of 278–283 days and is characterized by high yield, reaching 80–83 centners per hectare, confirmed by state trials. Plants of medium height (77.1–89.8 cm) exhibit high productive tillering and well-earned heads, which contribute to stable yield formation.
The main advantage of the Pokrovskaya variety is its high resistance to extreme climatic conditions, particularly drought and frost. The variety possesses a unique combination of physiological-genetic mechanisms ensuring maximum resistance to water deficit. Moreover, Pokrovskaya is tolerant to major diseases and pests such as brown rust, powdery mildew, Fusarium, Swedish fly, and rice bug, significantly reducing the risk of yield loss.
This wheat variety is recommended for cultivation in the Forest Steppe and Polissia regions, where it demonstrates high adaptability to changing climatic conditions. The grain of this variety is characterized by high protein content (13.3–14.2%) and gluten content (32–35%), making it attractive for grain use. The variety is resistant to lodging, shattering, and germination of grain in the ear, which simplifies agricultural practices and improves the quality of the final product.
